Recognized experts in the field of Lifestyle Medicine, nutrition, wellness coaching and health promotion will facilitate this highly interactive and patient-centered activity. This one-day course will consist of lectures that will define and establish the need for incorporating lifestyle medicine into physicians' practices. Lectures will focus on the background and relevance of lifestyle medicine, the exercise prescription, physician health, wellness coaching, and physician counseling on weight management, smoking cessation, nutrition, physical activity/exercise, and stress management. Participants will also benefit from question and answer sessions, self-appraisal of personal lifestyle choices, and surveys to demonstrate changes in knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors in clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
• Educate physicians in the essential elements of Lifestyle Medicine including exercise, nutrition, weight management, smoking cessation, and stress management to support coaching of their patients toward taking responsibility and making improved lifestyle choices.
• Encourage and facilitate improvement in physician health choices to enable physicians to serve as role models for patient lifestyle change.
Targeted Audience
This course is designed for physicians and other health professionals interested in learning about the fundamentals of Lifestyle Medicine to support their collaboration with patients in making lifestyle changes that result in reduced disease risks. Presenter Bio:
Paul A. Estabrooks, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of Human Nutrition, Food & Exercise at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and leads The Virginia Tech Center for Translational Obesity Research housed within Carilion Clinic. Dr. Estabrooks’ research focuses on health promotion related to physical activity, healthy eating, and weight management. He has conducted a number of studies examining methods to help patients with pre-diabetes lose a modest amount of body weight through exercise and nutrition changes. He also uses a participatory model that integrates research and medical or community personnel to develop and test practical behavior change interventions with the ultimate goal of translating effective interventions into practice. He has received numerous awards for his work and is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health to complete studies examining the process of physical activity behavior change and work site weight management.

On July 27-29, 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity, will host its inaugural conference on obesity prevention and control, Weight of the Nation, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, Washington, D.C. Planning for the conference is being done in consultation with the Division of Adolescent and School Health; the Division of Adult and Community Health; the Association of State and Territorial Public Health Nutrition Directors (ASTPHND); the Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE); and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD).
